Jewish cinema shines
Lisa Seidenberg shoots straight when she wants to, having framed news with video cameras as a network journalist and producer for most of her life. But today she tells stories her own way, "with an edge."

Cinema File: Gilliam's genius easy to see in film's stunning visuals
I don't believe in curses. Over the years, many books have been written about troublesome film productions that were marked by bad luck, injury and tragedy ("Twilight Zone: The Movie" and the "Poltergeist" series come to mind) - some going as far as to suggest these movies were hexed from the beginning.

Cinema File: Breathing new life into the undead
Watch out, zombies. You're next on the hit list for Hollywood screenwriters who want to reinvent you by making you not scary anymore.

Cinema File: Watch and become a 'Big Fan' of Patton Oswalt
Most commonly known as the voice of Remy the rat in Pixar's 2007 hit film "Ratatouille," actor Patton Oswalt actually is one of today's sharpest, funniest and most original stand-up comedians. Both times I saw him perform at the 40 Watt Club, the shows were sold out and standing-room-only.

Cinema File: Cage brings the freaky back with 'Bad Lieutenant'
Do today's audiences even remember the crazy Nicolas Cage? Before he became an action star sometime in the mid-'90s with films such as "The Rock," "Con Air" and "Face/Off," Cage was known primarily for playing extremely weird guys. The nasal-voiced boyfriend in "Peggy Sue Got Married" and the skinny weasel of a kidnapper in "Raising Arizona" are memorable examples. In "Vampire's Kiss," he ate a live cockroach on screen (which reportedly took three takes to pull off), and went completely off the rails as an Elvis-obsessed outlaw in David Lynch's "Wild at Heart."

Cinema File: Story saves Cameron's 'Avatar' from sinking
I completely understand why it was necessary for director James Cameron to hype his new film as this groundbreaking, revolutionary movie that is unlike anything anyone ever has seen before.

Cinema File: Top 10 movies of 2009
Since vacation time and leisure funds were scarce this year, a lot of people found themselves going to the movies a lot more often than they normally would. For me, it was business as usual. I typically watch at least a hundred movies a year, if not more, but always have a difficult time making a best-of list. For the purposes of this column, I'm limited to picking films that were released this year, which cuts that large number down significantly. Out of an original group of more than 30 movies, I now present to you the Cinema File Top 10 of 2009.

Cinema File: It'd be a crime to miss these at Christmas
It was almost a Norman Rockwell scene in my house this past Sunday night. My wife stood on a chair putting ornaments on our tree as I fastened multicolored lights around our windows. We had a nice, warm fire going. Our two dogs cuddled up close to one another on their pillow. And blaring from our television set were the sounds of gunshots, police sirens and enough loudly spoken profanities to make a sailor blush. Why on Earth would anyone ruin such an otherwise idyllic holiday scene this way? Because our favorite Christmas movies just happen to be R-rated comedies about criminals.
